Detailed Information

Performance content Beyond the classics.
Perform 2 new Noh works that live in the present age!

Noh for contemporary audiences<
Noh was born in the Middle Ages and has kept its lifestrings for hundreds of years. It is important to preserve and inherit the traditional forms and skills. However, it is difficult to say that Noh is seen by many people now. Just by repeatedly presenting classic works, modern audiences may find a relationship with them #711;. With that in this thought, in order to make contemporary audiences feel that Noh is an art that expresses the society in which they live, we will perform two new Noh works.

Modern Challenges with Noh
The late Tomio Tada's "Our Lady of Nagasaki" (premiered in Nagasaki in 2005) and Diethard Leopold's "Jacob's Well" (2019 in Europe) This is the Japanese premiere) is a noh for contemporary audiences. "Our Lady of Nagasaki" depicts the atomic bombing and appeals for the misery of nuclear weapons produced by modern science and technology. Jacob's Well was created based on the New Testament theory that different peoples share water in the desert. It depicts the possibility of reconciliation of ethnic and religious conflicts that still continue around the world, and asks us who live in the global age what true diversity is.

Pursuing the expression of new noh that appeals to a diverse contemporary audience
In this project, we will challenge the introduction of stage art, lighting, and video, etc., to appeal not only to the content of the work but also to the various audiences of the present day in terms of expression methods. To that end, we gathered different talents such as the playwright and director Shin Sato (who participated in the production cooperation) who has been active in contemporary theater for a long time, and Naoto Iina, a video design artist, to create a team. We also project English subtitles to reach out to non-Japanese speaking audiences.
In addition, mezzo-soprano Mutsumi Hatano takes on the chant of "Our Lady of Nagasaki", which is usually commissioned by local choirs, and plays a part in the expression. And in "Jacob's Well", actors from Austria and Poland participate, and Ai Kyoku (stray cat) is performed in german in the original language (with Japanese and English subtitles).

Our Lady of Nagasaki
Work:Tomio Tada
Pilgrims visit Nagasaki Urasupe Cathedral and meet monks. On the day of the atomic bombing, the monks told him that the town of Urasumi had become a sea of fire, as if it were the end of the world, and that the statue of Mary and the basilica had been burned down, and that many people had been distance. As she prays for the victims, a woman appears as the chant resounds. Is the figure the spirit of the A-bomb survivor or our Lady? The woman says she showed up to tell the mercy of the Virgin Mary and tells how the night of the atomic bomb was.
Noh depicting the tragedy of Nagasaki caused by the atomic bomb, and the salvation of world peace and soul. It was created in 2005 at the request of nagasaki citizens. Performed in Nagasaki, where the Pugwash Conference on Science and World Issues is being held, and in New York, where the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference is being held. At the performance, a local choir sings a chant, and this time Mutsumi Hatano, a mezzo-soprano active in both classical and contemporary music, will perform.

Jacob's Well
Work:Diethard Leopold
Two Jews Meet a Palestinian Woman in Jacob's Well. The woman tells the story of a Jewish man who gave water to a Samaritan woman in this well, even though the Jews avoided contact with the Samaritans hundreds of years ago.
Noh based on the gospel story of John in the New Testament, in which two opposing peoples share the water of a well in the desert. He questions the ever-incessent ethnic and religious conflicts in the world and asks what it means to be a symbol of water. This work was created over several years by Deethard Leopold and Kanji Shimizu, ph.D. in Psychology and Art Curator in Vienna. In 2019, it will have its world premiere in Vienna (hosted by the šา-Day Association, venue: Odeonza), Paris (hosted by the Japan Cultural Institute in Paris), and Warsaw (hosted by the Wajenki Museum, venue: Royal Theatre), and this will be its Japan premiere. The 2019 premiere was attended by local actors and performed in multinational productions. Actors from Poland and Vienna who appeared in the premiere will participate this time, and ai kyo kyo will be performed in German (with English and Japanese subtitles).
