Performance content Introduction

sensuality? Is it pure love?
Wagner's popular work

A popular work of the middle Wagner period based on the medieval legend of Tannh?user and the legend of the Wartburg Song Battle. Depicting the struggle and salvation of the knight Tannh?user oscillating between sensual love and spiritual love, it is a festive work full of spectacles unique to opera, such as the famous overture often performed alone, the sensual ballet, the pilgrimage chorus playing reverent research, the majestic grand march, and the place of the lofty singing battle, and it is a festive work that has gained wide popularity in Wagner. Elisabeth's "Hall of Songs", Wolfram's "Song of the Evening Star", Tannh?user's "Narration of Rome", etc., there are countless places to listen to where you can fully appreciate the talent of a singer.
New production of Lehmann's production as the opening of the 2007/2008 season, the 10th anniversary season of the New National Theatre, was well received for its ability to enjoy Wagner's world on a beautiful stage that effectively moves between fantasy and reality.

Story

[Act 1]
Medieval Germany. The knight Tannh?user was captivated by Venus, the goddess of lust, in the forbidden land of Venusberg. Eventually, he gets tired of these days of pleasure and returns to the human world by shaking off the temptation of the goddess who tries to hold him back. Moved by the singing of a passing pilgrim, Tannh?user vows atonement. There, he meets his former friends who are on a hunt and returns to Wartburg Castle with the words "Stay with Elisabeth".

[Act 2]
In the Great Hall of Song at Wartburg Castle, Tannh?user is delighted to be reunited with Elisabeth and participates in a singing contest. The task of the singing battle from the lord Hermann is to reveal the "essence of love". His former colleague Wolfram likens love to a pure "miracle fountain," and other knights sing songs of spiritual love. Tannh?user refuted this, singing the Venus Hymn that the essence of love is sensual love, revealing his presence in Venusberg. The knights try to kill Tannh?user, but Elisabeth asks that "the courage of faith be given to this man." With this intercession, the lord Hermann ordered Tannh?user to go on a pilgrimage to the Pope for redemption.

[Act 3]
Elisabeth prays for Tannh?user's salvation, but he is not seen during the pilgrimage from Rome. Elisabeth asks Our Lady for Tannh?user's salvation in exchange for her life. Tannh?user appears there and recounts how he was the only one in Rome who was not given forgiveness. Desperate, Tannh?user tries to give in to the temptation of Venusberg once again, but Elisabeth's death saves her soul. "Elisabeth, pray for me," the chorus of praises of God's grace echoes as Tannh?user dies.
