Detailed Information

Performance content With a tradition and history of 387 years, the Yuki-za is also home to a playwright who was active in the Edo period, Hiraga Gennai's calligraphy. That was the 1779 premiere of "Ara Goryo Nitta Shintoku".
The third generation Ryokawa Funayu, the predecessor Magosaburo, has been warming up to this project for many years with the desire to revive and stage "Aragorei Nitta Shintoku".

Funayu will turn 80 next year, and with the strong will of the person himself who said, "If I don't do it now, I won't be able to do it," I have decided to take on the challenge of this work.

Hiraga Gennai is famous as an inventor of the Edo period, such as Elekiteru, but he worked on nine puppet j?ruri under the pen name "Fukunai Ogai". "Ara Goryo Nitta Shintoku" is a follow-up to the popular work "Shinrei Yaguchiwataru" that is still performed in Kabuki even today. In this work, while incorporating the story of "Shinreiyaguchi Wataru", we will focus on the female itinerant history of Nitta Yoshimine and reconstruct it as a single work. Written and directed by Yukikazu Kano of Hanagumi Theater, who played a leading role in transforming the often difficult kabuki and classics into something that can be enjoyed as entertainment for the common people once again, under the slogan "Neo Kabuki," the play will be revived for the first time in 244 years since its premiere as a stage that lives on in the Reiwa.

Remarks
Organizations Overview The Yuki-za was founded by the first Yuki Magosaburo in the 12th year of Kanei (1635) of the Edo period.
After more than 380 years since then, we are the only traditional "Edo thread puppet" theater company in the Japan, which is currently designated as a "National Records Selected Intangible Folk Cultural Property" and "Tokyo Intangible Cultural Property". Among the five theaters officially recognized by the

Edo shogunate, the three Kabuki seats (Ichimura-za, Nakamura-za, and Kawarazaki-za) inherited only the original name, and the remaining Satsuma-za also disappeared, and only the Yuki-za currently survives as <-za>.
current Magosaburo Yuki performed in 2021, and the thirteenth generation Magosaburo Yuki was born.

Yukiza's main activities include "new performances" written and translated in addition to the historic "classical performances", and in the new works, the actors and puppets compete in the same theater space, the puppeteers play the roles in the flesh while using the puppets, and in the plays, the "classic" methods and "Edo copy pictures" ( Painting and projecting on glass plates), etc., and continues to create a unique stage space for Yukiza.
